  • Description

The work of Ernst Ziller constitutes a turning point in the architectural history of Greece. In the latter half of the 19th and in early 20th century, the archi-tect from Saxony, who served his apprenticeship at Theophilus Hansen’s side and decided to live his life in Greece, created buildings as numerous as they were unique; buildings conceived in the spirit of neoclassicism and eclecticism that was to leave its mark on Athens and other Greek cities.

The volume presents a survey of Ernst Ziller's architectural activities in Greece. Fifty five of his projects are presented in chronological order along with de-tails of both their exteriors and interiors.

The texts include a description of, and brief commentary on, each of the structures, which include theatres, churches, markets, schools, town halls, mu-seums, monuments, hotels, archaeological schools, banks, palaces, mansions, houses and shops.

The original photography of Yiorgis Yerolymbos captures the supremacy of Ziller's work in private and municipal buildings, all of which are now listed.
